CNN vs. Fox News Comparison: Network News
I decided to compare the reporting of CNN and Fox News. This highlighted differences in focus, tone, and presentation—these also show the networks' different approaches.
CNN and Fox News both covered the day's big headline: the latest policy proposal from the U.S. President. The angle was different though, and how deep they looked into this news item. CNN delivered a very deep analysis with several experts' points of view and statistics providing the impacts of the policy. The tone was neutral, explaining information for an understanding discussion.
Fox News reported it from a different angle dwelling largely on the criticisms and possible negatives from opposition figures, which were emotional and put in a political context that seemed popular for their viewer base.
Other stories also showed editorial choices fitted to the perceived audience. CNN included an international news item on a European diplomatic breakthrough, while Fox News included a domestic one on a legal change at the state level. This news appealed directly to conservative values.
The comparisons thus brought to bear not just on the philosophical differences between the two networks, the intention on the part of CNN for in-depth analysis, as opposed to Fox's more right leaning attitude, but also showed how the choice of stories and, most certainly, their framing could manipulate viewers perception. This makes clear how reading the news from various sources is an important responsibility in forming an informed and all-around opinion in complicated matters. This served as another reminder about the importance of media for shaping political discussion and public opinion.
