CNN vs. Fox News Comparison: Network News

I decided to compare the reporting of CNN and Fox News. This highlighted differences in focus, tone, and presentation—these also show the networks' different approaches. CNN and Fox News both covered the day's big headline: the latest policy proposal from the U.S. President. The angle was different though, and how deep they looked into this news item. CNN delivered a very deep analysis with several experts' points of view and statistics providing the impacts of the policy. The tone was neutral, explaining information for an understanding discussion. Fox News reported it from a different angle dwelling largely on the criticisms and possible negatives from opposition figures, which were emotional and put in a political context that seemed popular for their viewer base. Other stories also showed editorial choices fitted to the perceived audience. CNN included an international news item on a European diplomatic breakthrough, while Fox News included a domestic one on a legal cha...

Website Evaluation

To evaluate the reliability of the websites disabled-world.com and disability.gov, we begin by examining their "About" sections and any other accessible information. Disabled-World.com offers a range of information on disabilities, including news, health articles, and resources. The website has an aim to provide information and resources to the disabled community and their caregivers. However, it does not readily provide information about the qualifications of the authors or the editorial process, which can make verification of the content's accuracy a bit challenging. Disability.gov , on the other hand, is a U.S. government website managed by the U.S. Department of Labor. This site serves as a portal to publicly available information and resources related to disability programs, services, laws, and regulations. Government websites generally hold a high standard of reliability because they are often subject to much oversight and must present evidence-based valid informat...

How to Interact Respectfully with a Person with Disability

Communication and discussion of disability are very sensitive subjects to many. However, I have had the opportunity to be taught on this subject when I read a very helpful handout, "Communicating with and about People with Disabilities."      I would say that they practice positive, human-first language. Using phrases like "the blind" or "the disabled" takes away the humanity and even a person's chance at their own dignified identity. We should simply say "a blind person" or "a person with a disability." All these rearrangements would respect the person's identity while, at the same time, placing more emphasis on the humanness of the individual and not the disability of the person.      Another aspect that is very important is the way one interacts with people with disabilities. If you meet someone with a disability, then offer your hand just the same as you might someone that didn't have a disability. It is okay to do ...

A Reporter's Journey with Trauma

There is a territory where in the media and professional communication that often gets hidden: the impact of traumatic events both upon those who experience them and the reporters themselves. As journalists, we find ourselves maneuvering through stories of disaster, tragedy, and loss, yet rarely do we pause to acknowledge the toll these things take on our own well-being.      We go into this area today as we look through the lens of one particularly heinous crime in a small town and reflect on profound lessons from the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma. As a reporter, I found myself thrown into the muck of a courtroom reenactment, tasked with recounting the harrowing experiences of a victim. But before I did this, I watched videos on ethical reporting and trauma awareness that were real eye-openers to the fine balance that exists between journalistic integrity and human compassion. They were also very clear that we should witness the trauma with se...

Analyzing a Speech

I attended a message or speech from a pastor, and he dove into the mentality of being “All In For Christ.” He began by pointing out the difference between merely professing allegiance to Christ and having a true commitment to Christ that is evident in one’s daily life. He used verses from James 4, and he highlighted the many dangers of having divided allegiances when in relationship of following Jesus and being trapped in worldly desires. The central idea of the message was built around the necessity of complete and radical devotion to Jesus Christ, and called believers and followers of Jesus to be all in or completely committed to their relationship with Him. The speaker heavily emphasized that there was not any room for half hearted devotion to Christ or anywhere at all in the Christian’s life. He cited multiple passages from the book of Matthew and James to back up this point and give evidence for his position. The speaker used an illustration about...

Analyzing the Art of Hooking Readers

With the new world of online news, the lead of a story is the key to capturing and holding a reader’s attention. This will determine whether or not a reader will stay and dive deeper into the narrative or scroll past. There is very little room for error, and today we will dissect three desperate leads from different internet news sites.      Lead One: The Purdue OWL gives a comprehensive breakdown of different types of leads that are used in journalism, and it emphasizes the key of having hooks that grab readers from the beginning. The many different types of leads all serve their own purpose of drawing a reader in. The lead of this website introduces the topic of leads and gives readers a source for further exploration. It answers an important question of where more information can be found for journalists. It doesn’t however dive into specific examples of leads. It accomplished its purpose, but could be improved.      Lead Two: CNN’s h...

National vs. Local Coverage by a Major News Organization

In the world of media coverage, the difference between the national and local news shapes our perspective and view of the world around us. Today we will dive into the halls of congress and the streets of our neighborhoods to see the balance between major news organizations and the differences between their national and local coverage.      Congress’s coverage is usually marked on the national beat by investigative reporting, in-depth analyzing, and picking up on political moves. It appears as though legislative battles, showdowns between each party, and more are all composed in articles to give readers an understanding of all the issues at hand.      The local level looks a bit different however, as the tone and the way content is compiled differs. The coverage is based on issues that impact the community directly from local governance. The usual themes of political parties and government as a whole stay the same, but the emphasis is bui...
